rudder design for boat

Rudder, part of the steering apparatus of a boat or ship that is fastened outside the hull, usually at the stern. the most common form consists of a nearly flat, smooth surface of wood or metal hinged at its forward edge to the sternpost. it operates on the principle of unequal water pressures.. You may find that a rudder that is large enough to work at low boat speeds is too large at high boat speeds, thus creating excess drag. you may find that the "perfect" rudder area for 20 knots wind and 8 knots boat speed is too small to work well at 6 knots wind and 2 knots boat speed.. We have many of the original molds and tooling for production boats made over the mast 60+ years in our inventory and can replace damaged rudders with the exact factory replacement. if you would like a custom rudder, we can modify or design from scratch a rudder that meets your exact needs..

rudder design for boat On a sailboat, as the rudder is moved to one side by means of the tiller or steering wheel, the force of the water striking one edge of the rudder turns the stern in the other direction to turn the boat.different types of rudders have different advantages and disadvantages. the type of rudder is often related to the boat’s type of keel.. Why aren’t rudders straight? you’d think if you wanted a boat to go straight, the rudders ought to be straight, too. not so, said chris critchett, a naval architect with michael peters yacht design: the rule of thumb is to incorporate a little bit of toe-in on the rudders, based on outboard-turning propellers on a v hull..
